Breathing Building proposes a new typology: "the Atmospheric Therapy Centre" where architecture and atmosphere are intertwined to reconnect people with the most fundamental act of life: breathing.
Constructed from a rigorous grid of square-section air ducting, the building inhales and exhales through flexible skin-like walls, expanding and contracting like the lungs of a living organism. This slow, rhythmic breathing invites visitors to become involuntarily aware of their own breath, gently guiding the nervous system toward calm and contemplation.
Fresh air is drawn through slender, translucent towers rising from a cool, dark, alternative climate carved beneath the dense urban landscape of the Isle of Dogs. The vast, open interiors are shaped not by solid mass, but by voids and atmospheres, offering a space of stillness amidst the hyper-capitalist skyline of London.
This project investigates the power of emptiness not as absence, but as a political and emotional force. By using the void to encourage introspection, relaxation, and reconnection, Breathing Building challenges dominant urban narratives and proposes new forms of civic inhabitation rooted in slowness, healing, and equilibrium.
Breathing Building asks:
Can the void itself become a tool for liberation?
Can space emptied of noise and excess heal the fractured human spirit?
